You probably know this format for the Daily Scrum:
“What did I do yesterday?”, “What will I do today?”, “Do I have any blockers?”
But did you know this is an anti-pattern?
This format appeared in the Scrum Guide until 2017.
Originally, its purpose was simply to help teams structure the daily meeting.
Over time, the essential point has often been forgotten: the goal of the Daily Scrum is to inspect progress toward the Sprint Goal.
The Daily Scrum then became a reporting meeting for the Product Owner or the Scrum Master, rather than a real moment of synchronization and adaptation for the team.
So, how can we do better?
Do you have a Sprint Goal that you can inspect during your Daily Scrum to check whether the team is moving in the right direction, for example with a confidence vote?
My advice is to avoid mechanically reciting the three questions and refocus your Daily Scrum on collaboration, adaptation, and collective decision-making.
That’s where agility truly begins.
And you, how does your Daily Scrum go with your team?
