If you’re looking to understand how Kanban can help you in your day-to-day work, I have a serious game for you: The Kanban TWiG game.
TWiG stands for The Work in Progress Game.
It is a game, or more accurately a simulator, that allows you to understand and experiment with workflow in Kanban.
In this game, you are given tasks of different colors, people with different specializations, and Work in Progress (WIP) limits on each column of the board.
From there, you must make decisions and simulate the work in order to complete as many tasks as possible with the resources available to you.
The game quickly highlights one of Kanban’s fundamental principles: starting more tasks at the same time does not mean delivering faster.
On the contrary, the more work you have in progress, the more bottlenecks and constraints appear. It is often better to finish the tasks that have already been started in order to improve the overall flow.
The Kanban TWiG game is an excellent tool for experimenting with and exploring Kanban principles.
In just a few minutes, it helps you better understand workflow and think about how to apply these concepts in your everyday work with your team.
