The Scrum Artifacts

You know the Scrum roles and the Scrum events. But what is a Scrum Artifact?

Scrum Artifacts are elements that provide the team with transparency about the work to be done and the work completed.

The first element is the Product Backlog.
It’s an ordered list of the items we’d like to build into the product. It’s under the responsibility of the Product Owner and constantly evolving.

The second one is the Sprint Backlog.
It contains the sprint goal, the items needed to achieve it, and the plan to reach that goal.

The third and final one is the Increment.
The Increment is the sum of the work completed. It must be integrated into the product before the end of the sprint and be potentially releasable to the customer.

Each artifact has an associated commitment:

  • The Product Goal for the Product Backlog.
  • The Sprint Goal for the Sprint Backlog.
  • And the Definition of Done for the Increment.

In short, Scrum Artifacts bring transparency about what we’ve already done, what we want to do, and what we’re currently doing.

What about you, which of these artifacts is the most important for your team on a daily basis?
