How does your team know what to do and in what order?
The Product Backlog is here for that.
The Product Backlog is the list of items the team wants to accomplish.
It’s ordered, so the most important items are at the top, the least important at the bottom, and it’s unique.
There’s only one Product Backlog, no separate to-do list in an Excel file on the side, just this one official list.
Each item on this list can be a bug, a User Story, or something to improve, and it serves as the basis for sprint planning, for the team, to know what the next topics to work on are.
The Product Owner is the sole person responsible for this list when it comes to what’s in it and the order in which it’s displayed.
Anyone can come and add to it, but it’s the Product Owner who has the final say on this list.
This list isn’t set in stone, it’s completely alive. If tomorrow a new idea comes up or an urgent need arises, it’ll end up at the top of the list. And that’s normal, that’s what it’s for.
In summary, the Product Backlog is a list of ordered items, managed by the Product Owner, that gives us the next steps to work on to improve the product.
